In Turkish, the present continuous tense (-iyor) is the workhorse of the language. While we use it for what is happening “right now,” it also handles habits and firm future plans. Think of it as the default “active” state.

The Vowel Harmony Logic

The suffix -yor is fixed, but the “buffer” vowel preceding it must satisfy 4-way vowel harmony

Debugging the Edge Cases

When building these sentences, keep an eye on these three common “runtime errors”:

• Vowel Narrowing: If a verb ends in -a or -e (like oyna- or söyle-), that vowel drops or changes before adding -iyor.
• Consonant Mutation: For specific verbs like git- (to go) and et- (to do), the t softens to a d when the vowel suffix hits it (gidiyor, ediyor).
• The “Ye” Exception: The verb ye- (to eat) narrows its vowel to an i, becoming yiyor.
